The Birth of a Movement
In the early 1990s, DJ Screw pioneered the "Chopped and Screwed" technique in Houston's South Side. By slowing down vinyl records to 60-70 BPM and adding record scratches ("chopping"), he created a hypnotic, syrupy sound that became the soundtrack of Houston hip-hop culture.
Screw Tapes
DJ Screw released over 350+ mixtapes called "Screw Tapes," distributed throughout Houston. These cassettes became legendary, selling from car trunks and small shops, spreading the sound organically.
Screwed Up Click
DJ Screw founded the Screwed Up Click (SUC), a collective of Houston rappers including Big Hawk, Fat Pat, and Lil' Keke. The crew became Houston hip-hop royalty.
